Lancashire fracking: 2.9 magnitude tremor recorded

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-49471321

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 has been recorded near the UK's only active shale gas site in Lancashire.

The tremor near Blackpool is stronger than those that forced Cuadrilla to suspend test fracking operations in 2011.
The British Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at about 08:30 BST.

Latest:

The Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) said fracking would be suspended while it assessed recent seismic activity.

Re: drilling in UK stopped because of earth tremor

I was looking at the magnitude of the 2016 earthquakes in Umbria, Italy. They were just over 6. I was there in between the two quakes and was terrified in the middle of one night when we had some really loud thunder and I woke thinking it might be a quake.

2.9 is reportedly like a piece of furniture falling from a height. It's getting too close to a dangerous situation and it's about time they reviewed the strategy re expansion of fracking. Particularly when it's close to urban settlements.

That's good but they do this every time there's significant activity according to what I've just read. So they stop and then start again. The benefits are outweighed by the risks to our geological framework.

It seems that industrial and political greed outweighs the risks to our geological framework.

The benefits have yet to be established:

UK shale gas reserves may be fraction of what is claimed – study

https://www.theguardian.com/business...-claimed-study

The UK’s underground shale gas reserves may deliver only a fraction of the gas promised by fracking firms and government ministers, according to a study.

Research by the University of Nottingham found that early estimates may have exaggerated the UK’s shale reserves up to sixfold.

The University of Nottingham said it had used a new technique to measure the shale gas trapped in the Bowland shale basin in central England and found significantly lower levels than was suggested by a widely quoted study six years ago.

In 2013 the British Geological Survey (BGS) found there were likely to be 1,300tn cubic feet of gas. The latest study found there may be 200tn cubic feet, enough to meet the UK’s gas demand for around a decade.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-49480142

The 1.0 tremor was the second to be recorded on Monday

A 1.0 magnitude tremor has been recorded at a fracking site in Lancashire - the second within a day.

The seismic event was recorded at about 22:20 BST on Monday at Preston New Road near Blackpool.

Fracking: Cuadrilla removes equipment from Lancashire site

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-49879291

Fracking equipment is to be moved off a site in Lancashire where operations have been suspended due to earthquakes, an energy firm has confirmed.

The process, which releases gas from shale rock, was suspended at Cuadrilla's Preston New Road site after a 2.9-magnitude tremor in August.

Cuadrilla said no fracking would take place before its licence ends in 30 November and has no plans to extend it.

Cuadrilla has now said it was "demobilising hydraulic fracturing equipment" at the Little Plumpton site.

Its current licence covered 30 weeks of fracking but it had only fracked for 21 weeks when operations were suspended.

Anti-fracking campaigners Friends of the Earth welcomed the announcement.

"With no more fracking taking place before planning permission expires, and Cuadrilla yet to apply for an extension, work at this site could soon be at an end."
It's a significant victory for anti-frackers but Cuadrilla intend to move to another site, so opposition may have to be restarted there .....

Fylde Council calls for fracking ban on safety grounds

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-50068877

The Conservative-controlled Fylde Council passed a motion accusing energy firm Cuadrilla of being "unable to guarantee public safety".

The motion, passed on Monday, calls on the government to ensure safety "by continuing to uphold the stringent regulations currently in place on the Shale Gas industry".

It stated: "The industry has not been able to clearly demonstrate it can operate within these parameters and guarantee public safety, therefore this Council also calls upon the Oil and Gas Authority to ensure all hydraulic fracturing operations in the Fylde cease with immediate effect."
