Re: ever thought about or run your own business?

Nice to hear a good outcome Bread.
I can remember when the interest rates soared..so fast that happened and ok they 'helped you out' by extending the repayments on your mortgage by many years...My husband was a HGV driver for Lynx, was BRS back in the 50's now UPS purchased it a few years ago

He was able to take early retirement in 1996/7. Had a small pension and a cash payout. That is when we paid off our Mortgage.

He signed on for agency work doing a couple of days a week until 2000 when we moved from Beddington Surrey to Bexhill on Sea
We had both worked most of ours lives,so now is the time for taking work out the equation...

Re: ever thought about or run your own business?

I've been self employed for 15 years now. CAD/IT/Marketing manager for another company that I helped with the start-up in 2006. I had been on contract through a few head hunter firms for years and worked for some major corporations (ComEd, General Motors, Federal Signal and a few archy and structural firms) here in the US through my career, and was in between jobs when this one came along. I'd always find some sort of work though, whether it was changing oil/tires in a shop, working night shift at a gas station, or like how I started here, which was sweeping up in a steel fabrication shop, just to pay the bills and keep a roof over my daughters head. I was unemployed and in a band at the time and our drummer got me in the door. After a few months of sweeping up and some low-end welding/fab work, I showed them my CAD work and was instantly retained. The downside was that I had no vacation, no paid holidays, and zero benefits because they wanted to start me off as contract, which I still am. It took 11 years until I finally screamed enough to the owner that I was burning out and if I didn't get vacations and paid holidays I'd walk. My resume is quite impressive actually, so they knew they had something. I got what I wanted, plus a raise and a bonus. I'm comfortable now and love what I do, so everyone's happy and the company is thriving. It's never really been about money for me though. I'd rather be happy than rich, honestly. There has to be some balance there.

Re: ever thought about or run your own business?

I had a successful job in a large Company as did my husband. We were both happy and satisfied with our jobs so saw no reason to leave.

Our son started his own computer business after leaving Uni over 20 years ago. My Son-in-law also has his own Engineering business making new machinery for the big Bakery Companies.

Is there much business trading "souls" in Ozzie then Keezoy ??

I'm right on the edge of retiring and busy looking at the feasibility of starting my own photography business. Not as a principle source of income, but more to top up savings and a little spending money without dipping into savings. Not after a full time occupation, but more of a extended part time hobby-job I can work my own hours when I choose.

That's a lovely idea, Graham, and I wish you all the success! What kind of photography are you interested in?

Re: ever thought about or run your own business?

Good luck to you Graham. What form of photographic business your thinking of? Buying and selling equipment or being commissioned as a photographer to do things like wedding photography or product?

Don't want to put a damper on your idea but I strongly suggest you pay a visit to a large photographic web site forum and see what those who have been doing it for years are now talking about.
Sorry I don't think I am allowed to mention which one.

Like any business ,even as a hobby, there are pros and cons to cosider such as model release forms- third party insurance- Camera insurance to name just a few things to consider and a lot more as well like contracts etc
