We can't without the economy shrinking massively. No government will do that. We would still be reliant on overseas investment and materials. Don't forget it's the Empire that made Britain so wealthy.

It just seems that all the money is going out, and nothing is coming back Annie......What's the prognosis?

One option which Dyson, for example, has done is to design articles in this country but have them made much more cheaply in the Far East.

Profits from his vacuum cleaner sales comes to this country, but he saves a lot of money using cheap labour.

Unfortunately, it doesn't provide jobs for manual workers in this country, but I can't see any way around that and remain competitive.

I think that at the end of the day we need to encourage more young people to think about going into jobs that cannot be farmed out to foreign countries. There are still many manual jobs that still pay well, of course. Plumbing, for example.

A first step is to change all those Mickey Mouse 'universities' back into polytechnics and technical colleges, which used to train all of those manual skills. We need more of those people.

If where I work is any indicator they are bringing outsourced jobs done in India back to local office in house in woking because cheap hasn't worked out very well for customer service and tech support.

Also if we stop free movement, won't the massive amounts of benefits and money worked for by Europeans be staying here and not being sent home to other European countries ?

This is true. I am very aware of problems with speaking to call centres in some foreign parts, and the one I notice most is my disability to understand what they're saying!
