Volcanos and Limestone

I have been visiting the land where Australia tore away from Gondwanaland a few years ago.

First Mount Gambier's water supply - the Blue Lake in the volcano crater (it really is blue):

Umpherston Sinkhole also in the town of Mount Gambier SA.

Finally I climbed to the top of Mt Schank to peer into its crater.

All these scenes and more can be seen at:

Re: Volcanos and Limestone

Where is the limestone? I hear you ask.

The world famous London Bridge, it was something of a surprise to the two people stranded on the outer arch when the inner arch collapsed in 1990

Ah! the 12 Apostles sadly whittled down to about 9 or 10:

Then there is Thunder Cave part of the Loch Ard Gorge area.

There are even arches for those that like arches.

The coast is pretty and very rugged.

The only thing further south is Antarctica.

Re: Volcanos and Limestone

Thanks for your comments about my pics.

Just to show that the Blue Lake really is Blue here are some pics of Valley Lake which is literally next door to Blue Lake taken on the same day.

The blue is the result of some chemical reaction (not copper sulphate). The crater and lake are relatively deep.

Valley Lake on the other hand is shallow and only takes up a section of the crater(s) it is in, the rest of the land has been turned into a recreation area (including boat ramps and BBQs) for the locals - as you can see not a tinge of blue.

I said crater(s) because they used to be two separate craters which finally exploded, merged and partially filled themselves in.

A couple more snaps of Blue Lake one showing the pumping station - as I said it is the towns water supply - you can see how steep the crater walls are.
