Are we set to become a Republic ???

I have advocated and campaigned for the abolition of the House of Lords for many years, seems the scumbag 'nasty party' are now coming to realise the rationale behind my idea.

Who is part of the 'think tank' ?

It's probably the first move to secure jobs for all those MEP's and future unelected politicians with no place and no job to go to. Therefore, no change in substance, just a different title.

More maneuvering behind closed doors for the benefit of the few.

Who then is going to keep and eye on the house of commons to check on what laws they are passing ?

I would be interested on who you would recommend instead.

Perhaps they'll form a second house of elected people, hopefully from all walks of life.
I can't see it happening as some MP's retire and become Lords and Ladies don't they?

Yes Tessa darlin' at the moment they do, but with an ELECTED second chamber the House of Commons will no longer be able to dictate, particularly, in completing the constitutional reforms I have advocated by converting MPs from representatives to delegates.

Re: Are we set to become a Republic ???

Any changes made to the Upper House will have significant impact on our law making processes in the UK.

That may or may not be a bad thing but changes made to appointments to the Upper House can not be simply a matter of having elected members in place of the present system.

Although I am not a fan of the Monarchy it does have one thing going for it. No matter how awful they are they do at least prevent monsters such as Mrs Blair being elected as head of state.

Set to become a banana republic, politically unstable , impoverished working class and a ruling plutocracy.

The same old, same old tired argument from the hard of thinking who clearly do not understand what democracy means.
If she stood, which I doubt she would and if she was elected, which I doubt given all the vested interests right wing press that would be spewing their hatred against her for their dullard readers to swallow and believe, then she would be our rightful, democratically elected head of state.

Re: Are we set to become a Republic ???

We desperately need to become a republic. The millstone round this country's neck for ever is the monarchy, the symbol of privilege and demanded deference, the keystone of the whole sorry class structure and the straitjacket that traps everyone here in an atavistic set of imposed values that bear no resemblance or worth to reality.
In a country where many people live in imposed poverty and sickness, to give hundreds of millions of pounds to this overpampered, wealthy by inheritance, bunch of parasites and scroungers is nothing short of criminal.
