Gull Staring!

On our local news, scientists are doing a survey. They want people on the coast or where they see gulls to stare at them eye to eye for several seconds to see if the gulls get stressed & either walk or fly away. This is to find out if staring at them will deter them from grabbing peoples food. Most food in people's hands is grabbed when the person hasn't noticed the gulls, if the person or a person nearby stares at that particular gull they want to find out if it puts the birds off thieving.

Re: Gull Staring!

As a coastal inhabitant, I can assure anyone interested that very little will deter gulls from doing anything they wish. IMO they are complete and utter pests and should be culled! In my area they have reached an overwhelming population size that has become very intimidating and a menace.

I'll give it a go ... see if I can stare them out.

Deary me, is that all scientists have got to do now - seeing if they can out-stare a sea gull to save their chip butties?

What about the gulls that swoop down from behind, how will that work I wonder? I mean these birds have mastered the art of nicking to perfection and I doubt many are going to only attack from the front, after making sure they have eye contact with your first!

Re: Gull Staring!

Those things are HUGE - why would I risk 'stressing' them?

I have heard they taste good in pies.

I thought it was funny. Even funnier was the fact that where the interviewer & scientist were on Newquay beach there were no gulls.
I think they meant anyone nearby where people were eating, those who weren't that is & the gulls sighting food, to get the gulls attention & then stare it out.
I can't see it working either.

I agree Tiff, the glulls will be laughing their socks off, as they are eyeing up the next tidbit.
