Drums of War

Australia’s home affairs secretary has warned “drums of war” are beating as Australian tensions with China continue to deepen.

In an Anzac Day message to staff Michael Pezzullo said the nation must strive to reduce the likelihood of war and warned Australia must prepare to send of troops to fight.

Last week China labelled the federal government’s decision to scrap Victoria’s controversial Belt and Road deal with the Asian superpower and “unreasonable” and “provocative” move.

Mr Pezzullo said in an article for The Australian “let us continue to search unceasingly for the chance for peace while bracing again, yet again, for the curse of war”.

Note that is the US ABC not the Australian ABC

Bruce, it is notable that this story is from the US. Indirect national news is never the best source. News stories from the BBC about the US, for example, are often off the mark and should be taken with a grain of salt.

That said, the more prudent quote from the story is “The overarching message from government is that we need to be alert but not alarmed.”

Australia and New Zealand have my respect in their remembrance and commemoration on Anzac Day.

Re: Drums of War

Most countries think in terms of a few years or a decade ahead. China, however, thinks in terms of a hundred years ahead. Make no mistake about it, China has full intentions of turning the entire South China Sea into Chinese territory. For many decades now, China has been creating "Chinese Islands" on top on coral reefs and turning those islands into military bases, there by extending China's military bases 1,200 miles into previously international waters.
Unfortunately, we, the free nations, are financing China's imperialist ambitions by buying goods from China.

...and we might well want to remember the perils of Thucydides' Trap.

Why we are allowing the pandemic and theories on anthropogenic climate change eclipse any real discussion about the the squatting that is going on in the South China Sea is beyond me.

That type of question can be applied to many situations.

Hi

It is not that long ago in the scheme of things that the UK did the same to China, we even went to war to continue to sell them opium.

China also suffered greatly from the Japanese occupation which started years before WW2.

I am of the view that China cannot be contained militarily.

They can however be reined in financially, but as long as we are so consumption oriented and buying cheap Chinese Goods then we are continuing to fund their ambitions.

China is simply following the same path that all great empires have followed. So is America. The trouble is that the empire that gets its ass kicked in being deposed goes down in flames taking others with it.

I am. Why pay over the odds when you don't need to?

Because such things are MUCH more important. The emergence of the Chinese empire is inevitable.
