Dahlias

How's your dahlias doing this year?

Do you start yours off in pots, and are they moving much yet?

Mine seem ever so slow this year. So do the Begonias.

Gosh Mups, dahlias bring back memories lol

My tortoises ate ALL my parents' dahlias

Not a very helpful post I admit but just thought I'd utter
and yes I would start them off in pots and when planting out, erect a strong fence around them

I'd forgotten about your tortoises Rachel, I remember you saying ages ago you had a poorly one. Dare I ask what happened in the end? Did he recover?

Re: Dahlias

Mine are doing well in a cold greenhouse, three large clumps split from an enormous clump I dug out of the garden in March. Dahlias in pots just starting to show.

Dug out in March Rehab? So you left yours in the ground over winter did you? Did you just mulch them and leave 'em?
Will you put them in pots first, or straight back in the ground?

Do you like the great big blooms or the pom poms best?
I'm not so keen on the pom poms myself.

I leave mine in the ground and in pots without any protection Mups, they will all go back into the ground by next week.
The attached pics are from last year.
I like the all the dahlia family but I am trying some small Pom poms, but not having much luck at the moment

Re: Dahlias

Ooh, very nice too Rehab. I'll have to try and get a photo of mine to show you this summer, if they grow on alright.
I know I should have one of those pretty purple ones with the white tips on the petals, they're nice, can't remember the name off-hand.

Now, in the meantime, tell me you are impresssed with my Agapanthus and Bishop Dhalias.

Re: Dahlias

My Dad used to be a great fan of Dahlias, he used to grow all kinds and colours. I've never grown them myself ... I think I was put off when at home and they were always full of earwigs Do dahlias still harbor them?

Re: Dahlias
