Taking things easier.

Recently I'm finding that I'm beginning to take things in my stride more than I used to. I'm feeling it much easier not to get annoyed or irritated with trivial occurrences and instead I'll simply 'switch off'.

For example, at work in our tea breaks the people I work with religiously watch Family Guy and American Dad during our night shifts. These are inane and loud American adult cartoons and my work colleagues are howling with laughter at them every night. Where at one time I would complain and moan and turn the TV over, I now sit on my own reading my music magazine and doing the Mail crossword utter oblivious to these stupid and moronic cartoons that my fellow 50-somethings are rolling around the floor at.

At the gym I've also decided to start taking things easy. Simply banging out the heavy weights in an effort to "stay big" doesn't interest me anymore. I am quite happy to keep myself to an adequate level of fitness without hammering the muscles, a pointless thing to be doing when you're over 50. It's taken me a long long time to be realistic about that but I'm actually feeling more alert and having more energy since I've eased off on all that pummelling. (Mods breathe a sigh of relief)

Then at home when I would be frustrated about everyday happenings such as 'spilt milk' or a stupid celebrity appearing on TV, I just turn my back on it all and go into another room to relax with a book. Similarly, I can't be bothered with arguing anymore on this forum with certain individuals who have a penchant for this type of conversation. Until recently, I would be one of them but now I will leave the thread and move on. I feel much more relaxed because of this.

And that's the operative phrase - "Move on". Life's too short to worry, argue and bother about mundane happenings.

Does anyone else go through this? Am I being lazy or just becoming a little wiser in my post-middle age?

I'm sure I've chilled. I still don't care for shouting or rude people.

Same her bud. Why are people so noisy these days. Those who are standing right next to you positively shouting in your face? I generally walk away and talk to somebody else instead.

I agree with you Floydy, I used to get really upset and at time very angry over stuff, even posts on here. Like you I gave myself a shake one day, said Sod Them, and moved on. I'm cool calm and collected these days...well mostly, but my BP is a lot lower.

Good for you, Roxy.
It's as if it's a sudden reality check that hits us and we change overnight. Like a big slap around the head we've needed to sort ourselves out.

Yep. I walk a lot. The dog of course. We meet and socialise with others. Pleasant exchanges for the most part. This morning I greeted on with the usual "Good morning" just to be totally blanked.

The kindest interpretation I can put on that is that she was deaf. Stroll on.

Re: Taking things easier.

It's maturity Floydy, the realisation that none of this trivial crap really matters at all.

I'm the first to admit that sometimes I get wound up about certain things, when that happens these days I tend to take a step back (if it's online I take a break) and attempt to get some perspective. In my younger days I would more than likely become combative and argumentative.

I just find there's not very much worth getting wound up about these days and walking away or ignoring the crap is the easiest (and safest) option.

Yes, maybe that's it. Perhaps we need to reach a certain age before we realise it's just not worth it. I have always tended to back down in heated situations which has always annoyed me, until a few weeks ago, I delighted in fronting a situation out and watching the other guy shrivel back. I enjoyed it immensely but only for a while. The next day, I felt pretty stupid.

Floydy, l can understand how you are feeling. I think it is a type of disillusionment and you walk away because you just can’t be bothered, especially when it’s a load of trivia!
