Best Historic Sites

We are lucky to have so many wonderful sites we can visit. Pembroke Castle, Bodium, Leeds etc but houses with moats such as Ightham Mote are my favourites.

Do you have a favourite site that you have visited!

Re: Best Historic Sites

I have been to many grand houses and castles all over the country but my favourite place is Snowshill Manor

It isn't a grand house but packed full of interesting things collected by an eccentric called Charles Wade .
The collection grew so large it is said he eventually moved into an outside shed where he slept in a little bunk bed.

Snowshill Manor is delightful and a collectors dream. Charles Wade certainly did not let anything perish and we can benefit for that. You are constantly surprised by long forgotten things and best of all, I have never felt guilty at the few bits of clutter I may have gathered since visiting there.

Not much to see now but someone was kept there. Look up a song by Fairport Convention.

Thank you so much for that fascinating clip with a lot of history Og. No wonder it's eerie Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded there

We all have our particular interest in history and Fotheringhay has always intrigued me. No doubt it was abandoned because of Mary's beheading but still a shame there is no longer a building there..but at least it is still noted and as yet not built over..

Re: Best Historic Sites

I've put Snowshill on our list for next years' UK trip. Thanks for that. e've seen a lot of historic houses in our travels and I guess Chatsworth and Blenheim and Hampton Court would be high on the list plus Jane Austen's cottage in Chawton and Leeds Castle.

Haddon Hall is near to Chatsworth , less grand but I think more romantic and beautiful.
