I love Hostas

My last garden was alive with slugs and snails so could only grow them in pots and it seemed that it was going to be the same here

However the front garden was all lawn so we added a bed last year and I decided to try a hosta there

looking good so far

Re: I love Hostas

When I moved into my house (nearly 40 years ago now) the air was alive, when walking down the garden at night, with the sound of crunching snails underfoot.

They were in plague proportions largely because of a miniature bamboo (but that is another story) so I bought a couple of ducks to roam the garden; within months I was bringing home snails as a treat for them. Ducks are wonderful in the garden, they eat all the pests and they don't eat your plants.

Ducks can be fun - but - they are rather noisy and very smelly!

I have a pair of ducks who are doing a good job

Unfortunately mother keeps putting slug pellets down in one bed. I say not to but I turn my back and she's done it again so I have to keep it fenced off

I love Hostas too. Plantain Lilies as they are also known. Grown mainly for their many and varied leaf colours and sizes. An absolute must to eat for slugs and snails. I have several varieties, mainly in containers to make it easier to keep them slug free. I have three dogs so slug pellets are a definite no no.

That's a beauty Missy. Funnily enough we have just bought a variegated one (the first we have bought for years) and it's in a pot. So far it has been slug free but I think that's because they are more interested in the beans.

Thankyou

I have some variegated ones in pots around the pond but they still have to fully open

I just had to take a picture of that one as it was looking so good and not a nibble to be seen

Im not a natural gardener and prefer things like. hostas, bamboo and grasses

Dh likes lilies and mother just likes anything neither of us likes so the garden really is a complete mess
