How 1950s Las Vegas Sold Atomic Bomb Tests as Tourism

Last night I watched a Smithsonian documentary called "A-Bombs Over Nevada" (2015)

In the 1950's, the race against the Soviet Union to build a bigger, better bomb was on. The U.S. put their new nukes to the test on a desolate stretch of desert just 65 miles away from Las Vegas, and people travelled from all over the country to witness the detonations. This is the story of the nation's grand atomic experiment and the bizarre atomic subculture that spawned beauty queens, new hairdos, and radioactive superheroes.

I've located a clip from the documentary which illustrates just how "mad" those times in Nevada were:

This additional clip goes into more detail:

The Real Story Of Miss ATOMIC BOMB Contest

Some of the soldiers were less than 2 miles from an atomic explosion - their "safety measure" was to hunker down into a slit trench .....

This film was shot very near or on the testing grounds.

Most of the actors died of cancer with in 20 years.
