The GFA is in place to avoid the violence.
Uniting the island would undoubtedly see a return to violence because that would be ignoring the wishes of a large proportion of Irish who do not want to be anything other than British.
Given that NI came about specifically to avoid such problems it is a puzzle why those who want independence do not just move to Eire?
Surely that way the protesters achieve their wishes and both sides are happy.
Another option of course would be for large numbers of Protestant British to be envouraged to make NI their home.
Here's a thought for you to consider:
We British can legally live in Eire if we choose.
What would happen if (just say) ten million (or more) Protestant Brits decided to move to Eire?
Would they be entitled to a vote Zaphod??
What are the rules?
