Covid-19: UK arrivals face jail and large fines for breaking travel rules

New border measures in England

Announcing tougher border measures in England to tackle new variants of the coronavirus, Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the rules aim to "secure the nation" against mutations. He announced:
  • UK and Irish residents arriving into England from "red list" countries must book a place in hotel quarantine before travelling
  • They will be charged fees - equivalent to £1,750 for an individual travelling alone - which includes 10-days accommodation, testing and transport
  • Sixteen hotels with 4,600 rooms have been secured around a small number of ports and airports in England
  • All other international arrivals must book two PCR tests ahead of travel to take during their quarantine at home
  • Any positive result will undergo genomic sequencing to confirm whether they have a variant of concern
  • A new regime of penalties will toughen enforcement: Up to £2,000 fines for failing to take a booked test, up to £10,000 for avoiding hotel quarantine; and up to 10 years in prison for lying on passenger locator forms
Bang 'em up, bang 'em all up .....

Political Correspondent

For some time now, the government's political opponents have been demanding more is done at the UK's borders.

Critics say it should have happened ages ago.
Indeed ..... it should have happened ages ago ..... the government permitted thousands of infected travellers to enter the UK .....

Effectively buggers up holidays.
A test before going and 2 more on returning.
Not sure why it needs 2 tests when quarantining.

Cost of £150 per test adds £900 to the cost.
