95% Efficacy

Quick question. I know how a vaccine's efficacy rate is determined and hence what it means.

How many members on here also understand it? Do you want it explained in simple terms?

Re: 95% Efficacy

It means folks can only gather, en masse, in groups of 95 max.

Yes I understand the word efficacy and no I don't want it explained - thank you for asking and offering.

Being perfectly honest,I don’t understand it, I would love for you to explain it, Dextrous,

But please make it very simple...and as a you are a teacher...I know you will be very patient with me, if I don’t understand, when I ask further questions.

I am a very slow learner, takes a while for me to grasp stuff....

I also think this thread is very thoughtful and considerate,in trying to help others understand.....

Re: 95% Efficacy

I asked the oracle (the Internet) this question. Several versions of the meaning can be read, so I've got a fair idea.

Re: 95% Efficacy

I think it's a bit like ... the BBC website said rain 35% in W. London at 10:00am today. At 10 we had 100% rain; I know I got caught in it without my brolley.

Re: 95% Efficacy

It's more to do with how they get the figure 95%.
I'll use the proportions they got and create a different sample size to keep the numbers easier to follow.

Take one group (A) of 10000 people and vaccinate them.
Take another group (B) of 10000 and give them a placebo.

Wait for a while and then see what happens (ideally, you'd like to inject the virus into all 20000 people, but this clearly can't be done due to you likely killing people, so you'll just have to rely on "normal" exposure).

4 people in group A tested positive.
74 people in group B tested positive.

So, the vaccine "prevented" 70 people from catching the virus in group A.

70 out of 74 = 95%.

That's how they get their efficacy rate.

Or, perhaps, they never came in contact with someone who already had the virus.
