The Taxman Targets e-Bayers

Heard today that those who make money from selling goods and services via eBay, could be chased by the tax office for payment. I have never sold anything through this outfit, so would be interested to learn more and read reactions from those who do.

They have been doing it for several years I know several people who have ended up with tax bills they never expected.

It's only right if people are running a business on e-bay, surely? They aren't talking about people who sell the occasional bits and bobs, just those who are actually trading.

When I see what the auction houses are charging now I don't blame anyone trying to flog their stuff on ebay. 15% plus 20% VAT, that's 35 quid out of every £100, they also charge a fee for including your item/articles in the sale and they charge the buyer another 10% on top of all that.

Ebay seems to me to be dying, we no longer sell on there it's far too expensive and because the rates are so high the prices for items are too high too. So we buy very little too.

I still buy from eBay as some items are much cheaper.
I was looking for sugar free sweets for the Mrs. Found some on Amazon, but the P&P was £8.
I found the same on eBay same price, P&P free.
As for selling, yes it is costly, that is why the 'post and packing' is high to cover eBay and PayPal fees.

I used to buy and sell quite a bit on Ebay but as Julie has said its too expensive now...I dont sell at all anymore on there now...my last few sales were all hassle from customers saying they hadnt recieved items and other complaints which I know for a fact were lies.
Its not worth the hassle now!

I used to get nice things for Steampunk outfits on ebay but can't find anything lately. I don't understand why people would have to pay tax if they're selling something they already paid tax on when they bought it.
There's lots of Fb local selling pages I think they've affected sales on ebay, you don't have postage etc.to pay.

no Jem our auction house charges 15% and VAT on the 15% selling fee so the total in all is about 18% that applies to buyer and seller.

Another good selling site is 'Gumtree'. I put a car on there, and within the hour it was sold. And it's free.
