Re: To my shame...

I'd not have said anything about the glasses heist, but Daughter & I did stop someone from pinching from a charity shop.
He'd picked up & put items in his bag & calmly walked up to the counter & paid for the item in his hand. Daughter said to him, 'aren't you going to pay for the items you put in your bag', he looked very sheepish took them out & paid for them. It might have been an oversight on his part but we weren't going to let him get away with it. Not in a charity shop anyway. The shop assistant was very grateful that we'd done it, she said she thought he'd done it before there, we weren't local, just visiting so it wasn't as if we'd ever see him again. We did warn the other charity shops along that road as we went into them too, just in case he did the rounds. Some seemed to recognise him too when we said what he looked like.

Re: To my shame...

I was sat in the car park outside Tesco waiting for Mrs Fox. A bloke came running out clutching what looked like a bottle of Vodka. He sped across the car park and out onto the road pursued by a well built security guy and two female assistants.
I knew that none of them could have caught him, but I knew I could....I did feel a bit guilty at the time that I didn't give chase but I think I made the right decision as I watched the three staff come walking back empty handed. The bloke dropped the bottle as he made his escape and it smashed on the floor, I did feel a bit sorry for him, but I guess it would have slowed him down and he would possibly have been caught. Sorry Tesco, but you should employ fitter security guards.

If the law is anything like it was years' ago when a company I worked for was broken into, that may not be the reason. The police were around but the thief or thieves abandoned the stolen computers, they just dumped them in the car park as they made their escape. Apparently they would have had to have been caught in possession of the stolen computers or they couldn't have been charged. According to the police that happened all the time.

Best by far to keep snout out these days.
I agree. Even if he had been caught, nothing would have happened to him so it's not worth getting involved these days.

Fun fact (or not) Some shops operate a policy of ignoring any thefts under a certain amount.

Re: To my shame...

I would do nothing. Who knows what his financial situation is or who he is stealing reading glasses for. Maybe someone elderly that he cares for. Maybe he is too embarrassed to admit he needs them by paying. Who knows. These petty thefts, in the grand scheme of things are nothing compared to anything that big corporations do. it's best not to get involved in someone else's mess.

They factor it into their prices.

Re: To my shame...

I can see some people in here are quite content to say nothing if they witness a theft occurring. These people would behave differently if they was the victim of the theft.
