Original and best ?

Most of the re-makes of films that I have seen are, IMO ,very
poor compared to the originals. 'The Nutty Professor' for example with Eddie Murphy, was nothing compared to the Jerry Lewis 1963 version. A few days ago, we picked up 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty with Ben Stiller, again a pathetic re-write of the original Danny Kaye version.

One exception I just might allow was the re-make of 'Around the World in 80 days' with Steve Coogan. I thought it compared favourably with the 1956 David Niven film.

BUT otherwise, Some things should simply be left alone.

The remake of Of Mice And Men is one exception. Absolutely brilliant.

Re: Original and best ?

I have to say I hate remakes with a passion, whenever they remake a Audrey Hepburn or Bette Davis film I just refuse to watch it these days, others who cannot be bettered IMO are James Stewart Alec Guiness and Cary Grant absolutely no one should attempt any of their films.

Oh and Gregory Peck

Arrggg I wish you had watched the film earlier and written this last week when I bought the same dvd..

I generally hate remakes.. The time machine , war of the worlds ( both crimes against HG Wells)

Invasion of the body snatchers, the day the earth stood still.. Great special effects but the story was lost ..

Re: Original and best ?

What a coincidence, our daughter has just bought us the original "Walter Mitty" on DVD as a present. Lovely thought - or else she's a mind reader.

Re: Original and best ?

The remake of Little women was never as good as the original in my opinion.
