Respect our customs

Did anyone notice a story reported in the Guardian?

The Dutch Prime Minister has said that anyone who doesn't respect its customs should leave the country

Hooray! It's about time we had some of that attitude in Britain

Re: Respect our customs

I agree with you Zuludog, if you come to live in England then go by our rules, if we go to their country we go by their rules, simple as that.

Re: Respect our customs

What rules are you talking about? Do you mean obey the law?

Or is this just one of those silly meaningless statements that sound good but actually mean absolutely nothing and just create division between them and us.

Re: Respect our customs

What does that mean ? I respect people's customs wherever they come from, doesn't make me change what I do, as far as I can see most people do the same apart from a few odd people who try to convert others. So do they mean that we all respect each other or that some have to change to be more like us ?

People's customs are their own business providing they aren't abusive.

Re: Respect our customs

the example given was a ruling in respect of a bus driver who refused to shake hands with women who won the case because shaking hands wasn't part of the job. The danger is that such talk also demonises mental illness and stifles individuality, both of which we do not want to do in Britain.

What on earth has mental illness got to do with this topic?
