There is a world of difference between extracting information when there is a known, immediate threat to innocents and prolonged torture simply for the purpose of revenge.

There is NO distinction. Our laws do NOT permit torture, nor rely on any information gained by torture which can be highly unreliable in any instance.

Coming from somebody who calls an IRA terrorist who backed the kneecapping of youths(amongst other atrocities) "friend" I find rather ironic........

To a certain degree I must agree, wouldn't any of us admit to everything, give information, if we were being tortured?
I must admit that I would admit to killing all 6 million Jews if someone was removing my toenails with a pair of pliers.
I don't know what the answer is, because if I was in a position of getting information from someone who had kidnapped my child etc, I would not hesitate to torture that person , it's a hard call!
