Re: Who Are The Winners And The Losers Of The Coronavirus Outbreak?

According to the DM, BBC, etc., the latest Government brainwave is to "cocoon" vulnerable people, in essence stopping visitors from infecting vulnerable people. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51828000 https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-outbreak.html

As the articles state, part of this wondrous scheme...

"People in care homes and others who are less likely to survive the disease may be kept apart from the wider population until herd immunity has been established.

A government adviser said an army of volunteers could be recruited to support those in group isolation.

Dr David Halpern said they could take pressure off care home staff."

So, these Government geniuses want to stop visitors, yet plan to recruit an "army of volunteers" who, just as the staff who work at the various care homes have to do, will have to travel to and from the care home where they have chosen to volunteer at each and every day to get there.

Anyone see the fundamental flaw in this plan? The government doesn't seem to be able to work it out.

Re: Who Are The Winners And The Losers Of The Coronavirus Outbreak?

I really do think that they should take drastic action now so that it doesn't spread. All they have to do is advise those who can work from home to do so. This would totally reduce the numbers of potential spreaders and hosts. Those who have to be at work will be less at risk if there are fewer people all round. They should be checking the temperature of everyone who gets off a plane.

I think they said on the radio or news that they are working on a new testing kit that will give a result the same day. Manufacturers of testing kits stand to make a packet. As do the labs.

Fairy 'nuff.
But a practical proposition for tradesmen like plumbers or electricians. Nor taxi drivers. No work, no pay.

Yes of course but if other people only go out when they have to instead of socialising and mixing on commutes then that takes a significant number out of the equation. They should definitely close schools etc as has been the case in other countries. Children and students spread any virus. They can learn virtually for three weeks.

Quite right. It takes a lot of care workers to look after vulnerable people, too. Where I worked we had 90+ workers in over the course of the week to cover the various shifts, all of them having to travel to and from work, the vast majority using public transport. This figure doesn't include visiting delivery drivers, health workers, doctors, therapists, etc. If you mix with the public, each member of the public has already encountered dozens of other people just as you have. This isn't even taking into consideration family and friends you meet, all of whom have been out in public as well.

The sources of cross-contamination are in effect almost endless, and you also have to consider that the disease doesn't show up straight away. Sometimes it doesn't show up and people are, unknowingly, carriers. There's really no way to protect vulnerable people from a pandemic anyway. Asking a few percent of the working population to work from home, even supposing the infrastructure could support this kind of work for long, is well-meaning but ultimately fruitless.

I don't think there are any winners.

People are buying extra bog roll, but are they using more? I shouldn't think so.

Not quite sure about that dOOdy.
What about the firms making medicines, rubber gloves, sanitizers etc?

And what about the firms that deliver food orders, like the supermarkets, Ocado, Wiltshire Farm Foods, Oakhouse Foods etc. I should think they're run off their feet delivering to people who don't want to go into town now.

I often have my dog food delivered as I usually buy a month's supply at a time, and where normally I can book a delivery within one or two days at the most, this time I have had to wait a week! Never been like that before.

Masks, gloves and sanitiser, yes. Although you'll probably find people are saving them for when the end is nigh, and hopefully that day will never come. Next year they might dig out the mask they saved to use for DIY carpentry, instead of buying another.

It must be a busy time for home delivery food, but it will be followed by quiet times when C19 is history.
