I work with 5 people who are Freemasons and you see them having hush hush chats in corridors. My uncle was a Freemason (not sure now if he still is) and I attended his ladies night too. Of the people that I work with, not one of them has ever shown or commented that they have any belief in 'God'.
Do they need to believe in a God ?

My late husband (not a Mason) was an atheist with a belief in a higher power !

Lol ... no idea why I wanted to saty that

My parent's friend didn't do Church or anything religious.

I myself am a Freemason and a Muslim. As long as you believe in God and you are a man of good moral stature, you are an eligible petitioner to Freemasonry.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Is not a belief in a higher power still considered a 'god' ?

Re: Fremasonry

Hi

When I was working, for the Government, it was made perfectly clear to me that if I wished to advance beyond a certain level, it would be in my best interests to join.

"We need to know you are one of us" was the phrase used.

I never did join, I do not like secret societies and I certainly did not like getting the handshake from people to see if I was one of "them" when they thought they were going to get enforced against.

Not my scene at all.

I guess it could be termed as a 'god' but I personally think he was hedging his bets

He was a prominent member of AA for a few decades but always quick to point out that he was not a member of any organised religion.

Many people believe that AA has something to do with man-made religion.

It does not. Neither was he so arrogant as to think that he was 'all powerful' ... hence the belief in a higher power.

Hope that makes sense, although it may seem contradictory

Ah yes, the Buffs. Otherwise known as RAOB or Royal Antediluvian order of Buffaloes. During my National Service in the army I was very conscious of this organisation which tended to mirror the Freemasons. I rather think it’s members were all NCOs and not commissioned officers.

Re: Fremasonry

My dad was a Buffalo, but I'm not sure if he joined during WW1 or just after.
