Re: Casual racism

Ffose, If they said it in a derogatory way, then yes, I guess it is a form of casual racism, but the Welsh have always been Taffy, the Scottish Jock, the Irish Paddy and the English Limey. We also have shortened names for the French, the Italians, the Germans and so on. I believe these names originated in the Armed Forces.

When I was young I recall that my dad's workmates at the coalmines always called him Paddy (obviously being Irish), when my eldest brother was in their company, they always referred to him as "Young Paddy", again it was never intended as a racial slur, far from it.
However, I do remember my dad coming home one night and mum swabbing his bruised knuckles after his treat of a Friday night at the Pub because someone referred to him as "A Mick". Wrong move!

I don't believe most Irishmen and women relish being called Paddy.

Whyever not? It's just a nickname.
Nicknames are for people you're fond of.

English men don't mind being called Tommy or Pom surely?

Are we really such sensitive little flowers?

When I was a kid I used to get " Ginger,!" or "Ginge!" or "Carrots!" yelled at me frequently...knobs

Re: Casual racism

Ffose, I guess they were different times back then. I once had a Labrador that we named Taffy. Simply because we had bought him from a licenced Breeder that lived on the Horseshoe Pass in North Wales and thought it was an appropriate name at the time. (plus it was part of one of his Pedigree Sires Name) The way things are nowadays though, I would be a little nervous about naming a pooch with the name. People can be really offended.

Aye May, Tell it like it is. Cos it's true.. I've been called a good few names on here, and no doubt I'll be called some more before long. These days Water and Duck's back spring to mind.
