Re: Self Isolation

Self Isolation is sometimes imposed on people through no fault of their own
If they are housebound and have no family they do not see a soul for days, and rely on the TV or Computer for for communication
Gone are the days of looking out for your neighbour.

People are too preoccupied with their own lives.
Previously down every street, residents would make it their business to call if they had not seen a neighbour for a day or two and help with cooking cleaning etc.

Maybe it is different in Villages where people are more friendly.
Also children do not visit Grandparents as often as before as they would rather use their Mobile phones all day.
It must be excruciating spending hours alone daily.
I thought the Government had set up a Department for lonely people, but do not hear much about it now.

Maybe lonely people are too frightened of opening the door due to all the publicity about strangers.

There used to be in every Town Community Centers where one could go and have lunch and stay in the afternoon
It was a big mistake to close them down through lack of funding and quite mean as well.

Of course MP's look after their own. and I guarantee that non of their relations are isolated and alone.

Re: Self Isolation

I think in times gone by there was more community and of course people stayed close to families and friends . Now kids grow up and leave the towns for a better life . I've known many isolated old folk . I do feel the youngsters arnt really bothered about their mums and dads nowadays I know mine arnt. I never ask for anything and one day sent a text to say i was still alive to both the kids .

A different world now for sure

Hmm maybe things are different where you live. It's nowhere near that miserable here. I live in a street full of IT and computer people. Many of them do half their job or more from home. We see them all them time and have a chat. The kids are still playing all over the street safely. The traffic is 90% local and the drivers take care. They all have their computer games and stuff but they still lead outdoor lives playing all sorts of sports and socialising together. Our nana lives close by in an aged care facility and we are down there seeing her every other day. Maybe it's just a difference in culture. I always got the impression that families are generally very close in the UK. THat expression.."Our fred"..or "Our mary"..etc..It always seemed to really mean something to me. But then again I only lived there for a short time.

Don’t forget isolation is still used as a punishment, it’s as old as the hills, as anyone from Coventry will tell you.
Some prefer to mingle and multiply, I have been a mingler all my life, with just a little bit of multiplication to help keep the family name going, I find minglers are more devil may care, live horse and you’ll get grass, people.
Go forth young man and mingle, take chances, grab the Bull by the horns, for the Lord rewards the brave.
As that great Russian poet Ivan Node said “The longer one stays in isolation the sooner one is forgotten”

Re: Self Isolation

Isolation has been replaced by insulation, as a major issue.

Re: Self Isolation

In the pit village where I was brought up everybody worked at the pit or in the local shops. I lived in a crescent with perhaps 100 houses and I knew the names of most of the residents. It was a council estate and it was common to see grandparents living in the family home. There was very little crime, probably because nobody had anything worth much to steal.

The local pub was the social centre of the village where all the dads would drink together, with their wives at the weekend. Most people grew something and swapped with other people to subsidise their food costs. Even the church was well subscribed to on a Sunday. Nobody was left on their own and forgotten.

Fast forward to the village where I live now....There are lots of old people who own their own bungalow and the children have moved away, working and living in other parts of the country, or even abroad. Quite a few have lost their other halfs and so live alone. They keep themselves to themselves being suspicious of strangers. There has been a couple of break ins where the perpetrators gained access and searched the properties while the occupant was still present.

I only know a handful of residents in the village as the two local pubs have been shut down and apart from the church and parish halls there are no other meeting places for the locals. There are eight bungalows in our cul-de-sac and most of the residents have lived there forty years and we all look out for each other, but during hibernation in the winter we hardly see any of our neighbours.

It would appear that isolation is the price you pay for getting old.....Personally, I can live with it, but it's one of the reasons why I come on here....
