The power of social media …

I thought this news item illustrated just how powerful social media has become these days.

"An artist who found a message in a bottle tracked down the man who wrote it after he came up as a suggested friend on Facebook.

Miles Taverner discovered the bottle on the shore in his hometown of Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex, last month.

The message said: "If found please contact Chloe/Alfie, much love, Clacton-on-Sea, England.""

Your thoughts on this aspect of the power of social media?

To be honest I've come to despise the media. They used to be reliable but over the last few years they've gotten such a bad reputation for twisting things, scaremongering, and telling outright lies that I no longer trust them or believe a word they say.

The Social Media has many influences on our lives especially if gullible
It encourages women to buy cosmetics, that supposedly make us look years younger. HA! HA! They do not work.

Also copy Celebrities many of whom who are false.

But through research we can learn about ways of improving our lives also.

You have to be selective.

It's probably the very fact that everything is there to be used, all forms of media. Social media allows us all to know far more about what goes on generally and like all forms of media things can be twisted and lied about, only far more easily than used to be the case. Taking an overall view of the bigger picture is probably the only way to have any kind of informed view.

Also of course, Over50sForum is another form of social media and look at how much can be found and learned from on here!

The same as with most things in life. I never stop learning and no doubt if it wasn't for the internet and social media that learning curve would be far less than it is.

Being selective is important as there's so much to select from. All that is online and what we read / see on social websites comes from all different sources, so gives a wide overview of whatever it is we are interested in.

I've had lots of problems you simply would not believe with Facebook! I am now just selective as to what I view and do on there, I am only still on there as my granddaughters and family use it for Messaging. Also FB keeps me in touch with what they are doing in their day to day lives.

That I find is the answer and there's plenty of 'dross'! If anyone's interested, the problems I mentioned in a previous post, included a daily 'spamming' of up to 200 pornographic images and videos! I complained incessantly on a daily basis to their complaints section and it slowly diminished to where there is none now.

My main concern was that in just two clicks any youngster could access this. Although the rules state over 13 to have an account I know for fact younger ages are on there.

That's how I use it as well, my family is scattered all over the world and FB keeps us in touch via photos, jokes and gossip. I also have a load of friends that I've left behind so I keep up with them too. I fair enjoy it. As long as you make sure your account is secure your fine. I've been on it ten years now. If anyone here wants to, then send me a PM and I'll send you the link to my page..

My account was quite secure but somehow the facility 'People you may know' was used to display the images I mentioned. That was down to the organisation itself, proof of this was that I could do nothing so did not, but it has now ceased.
