Snowdonia: Climber survives 650ft fall at Crib Goch

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/51799046

A climber is recovering in hospital after surviving a 650ft (200m) fall in Snowdonia.

He was brought to safety by three mountain rescue teams, in heavy rain and 70mph winds on Sunday, after he fell from the Crib Goch ridge while scrambling with three other climbers.

The 35-year-old man suffered a broken leg, shoulder and wrist, as well as severe cuts.

A coastguard helicopter flew him to hospital in Liverpool.
The route:

It is, by all accounts, very popular, but I shall not be risking MY life any time soon .....

For God's sake, what on earth possessed them to go out on that ridge in weather like that? They should be charged a hefty fee to cover the rescue teams' expenses and the coast guard helicopter's fuel bill too.

I've never understood why people go climbing in the winter, wouldn't it be more pleasant in the summer months.

Yes, but unfortunately many of these people that are rescued, ignore good advice and warnings, as they believe despite their lack of experience they know better .

Sometimes one can only assume when these people fell out of the silly tree, they hit every branch on the way down.

Apparently, there are many deaths on Crib Goch and they contribute to the high death rate for Snowden, higher than Everest, allegedly. The exact figures are hard to come by but most of the dozens of mountain rescues each year are reported individually.

Even Crib Goch gets crowded in the summer:

and if someone gets "cragfast" then all scrambling behind will have to stop until they are released, so I guess that many climbers prefer the winter months when their forward momentum will not be compromised (and, of course, it's more of a "challenge" ..... ) .....

Re: Snowdonia: Climber survives 650ft fall at Crib Goch

I've done the Crib Goch Ridge years ago when I was a lot younger and fitter
I did it in good weather and enjoyed it

The problem with any kind of climbing or hillwalking is that one person's 'dreadful' conditions are just 'entertaining' to another

Nevertheless, I think that anyone who attempted the walk in the conditions described must have sh... you know what for brains
