The PM's spokesman says:
“We want to resume face-to-face negotiations but ... it’s for the EU to decide when and if they come,”

Oh boy, oh boy, they really have got the jitters now. Is it possible to upgrade Lord Frost to a Dukedom for his work on Brexit?

Whatever deal is going to be done, I doubt very much any member state will be able to veto it now. This happened in the Singapore agreement and it will happen again here. The EU will sign up the trade deal on behalf of the 27 and at the same time remove all national vetoes on trade deals. It also means that any other member state leaving can then be punished by the EU alone (as far as trade, access, security etc) is concerned - something they couldn't do with the UK as during Brexit, the EU was negotiating on behalf of the 27.

The next time, they will be negotiating on behalf of the commission only.

Mark my words....
Quite possibly, and as a result will encourage more member states to leave!

The normally pro-EU Independent has this report tucked away on their website:
"Brexit: Trade talks in fresh crisis as UK admits it does not know if EU will turn up"

It contains this:
"Approached by The Independent, Mr Barnier’s office said it was currently unable to confirm his travel plans."
And:
"But Mr Johnson told the House of Commons on Wednesday that his position had not moved, offering a “guarantee” that British sovereignty will be protected for the whole UK ..."

This morning the Beeb are going with "EU sources" saying that face-to-face talks will resume this weekend in London.
They also note Barnier's "not coming unless the UK give in"-style comment and goes on:
"One senior EU figure suggested the talks could be brief."

Re: Barnier Issues Ultimatum!

This a few minutes ago has been reported via Reuters:
“In line with Belgian rules, my team and I are no longer in quarantine. Physical negotiations can continue,” Barnier said. “Travelling to London this evening to continue talks.”
So ......... is he all mouth, or has he been ordered?

Perfect indeed: bluff called.

IMHO it's boiling down to a war of wills.
Who "gives" first - but the EU still will not accept real sovereignty, which will turn out to be a real problem for them if it indeed does finalize as a "no deal".
For a number of reasons some of which I have talked about before, i.e. suing the EU.

The other big problem for the EU is that we do not actually have to do anything other than let the clock run down.
We do not have to cede anything, just stay until the end and then the line should be "Oh well we tried our best but the EU refused to accept our full sovereignty".

There is no escape from that for the EU if they do not give ground because not a single trade deal in the world has required a nation to cede sovereignty in the way the EU is demanding.

But back to these "negotiations" - it is going to be an interesting few days if Barnier is to save face.
He can't very well backpedal so it looks hopeful for an outcome.
Not certain, but hopeful.
