Re: new boiler

I’ve heard plenty of plumbers say that WB aren’t as good as they used to be, but I guess it’s like comparing cars, everyone will have different stories to tell

Re: new boiler

We have an Ariston combi boiler, one of the cheaper brands.. We had it installed over 11 years ago and have had very little problems.

Re: new boiler

When I moved here there was a large free standing Worcester something or other, combi type I think as there was no hot water tank. The guy fitted himself (he was a heating engineer apparently). It was 25+ yrs old and scared the s*it out of me as it was noisy and grumbled and not very reliable.

After I had loft insulation, and my friend finding the flu in the loft was 'rusty and holed' (which my surveyor didn't spot), it was going to be shut down by an engineer.

So I had that taken out about 7 yrs ago and had a Vaillant eco tec combi boiler, and it's brilliant. No worries (fingers crossed it remains that way after I've just said that).

Re: new boiler

Three years' ago the central heating system in my house had to be replaced, boiler, radiators, everything including pipework. The old one was oil-fired, very ancient and very inefficient as it was not the modern combi-boiler type. On the advice of the heating engineer, who had coaxed the old system back into life several times, I chose Worcester Bosch. The intention was to change over to gas but the gas provider wanted three months' lead time to connect the property to the gas main. At the time it was almost winter so I stayed with oil, quite common in rural villages.

To date Worcester Bosch has proved very good, certainly far more efficient than the old system. However, that is not comparing like with like so probably a little unfair. Something to be considered is the guarantee that comes with Worcester Bosch boilers. That on mine is seven years on most parts and 10 years on one main part. That is the manufacturer's own guarantee. They also have their own engineers who carry out the work, providing the fault is nothing to do with the installing company's work.

Recently there was a safety recall on one boiler part, a valve. I was informed of this and an appointment made for their engineer to call and check if the suspected faulty part was used on my boiler. It was not so all was well. While he was here I asked about the function of the wall programmer / thermostat (wifi connected to boiler) as it seemed at times hesitant. All parts are carried on the van so no problem for that to be changed, free of charge, "just in case it causes problems at a later date" I was informed. That kind of guarantee is really worthwhile and something to be considered when replacing a boiler. Other family members have had Worcester Bosch gas-fired combi-boilers and are really pleased with them.

Re: new boiler

The worcester engineer was absolutely fabulous. He figured out all the faults others had made and where the elusive leak on the old vaillant had been coming from (the boiler itself but as it was the outlet bit it was evaporating before you could see it. So clever and no pressure drops since. The clowns before him had wanted to replace all the radiators at vast cost! One other clown had left a valve shut on the expansion(?) Tank outlet. It was one clown after another before the bosch superhero.

I'm not sure 'clowns' is the best epithet.
Rather than incompetence, perhaps they could simply have been taking advantage of an opportunity to make a nice profit!
