If you die intestate in the UK your estate gets divided up among your relatives according to a prescribed formula. When an aunt who was one of 9, died recently her estate was divided up into 8ths (her brothers and sisters) As my father had already died, his portion was further divided between his 3 children. As my sister had already died, her portion of his portion was further divided between her 4 children! There wasn't much left to receive by that stage!

The state only gets the money if no family can be traced.

I echo that. And I should have been clearer when I said it went to the State: that's if you have no family, which I don't; only some distant cousins I don't know and the State probably couldn't find if I died intestate.

Re: Have you written your will?

its some-thing that we have discussed a few times. but never really got around to doing. to be honest i havnt got much stuff. bit of jewelry. and as ive said everything ive got is to be sold and the proceeds given to the pdsa. when my dad passed away. my step sister behaved in an appalling fashion. she was on holiday when dad died. and my brother and myself had canceled our holidays. but she refused to. then when we was sorting out the flat. she was on the phone telling us what she wanted. funnily enough this victorian tea-service had a few bits missing.
but we also found out that she had been charging my dad 5-00 and hour to do a spot of cleaning for him. and she had been stealing off him. so both my brother and myself havnt spoken to her in 8 yrs now.
so yep wills are important.

Re: Have you written your will?

We made wills some time ago. Only one son though, so its all straightforward, if there's anything left by then
I really should update it and sort out something for the dogs. We'd left our old dog to the care of a friend but he wouldn't be able to manage this pair.

I've also made arrangements for Hatti or any other dog I may have if she goes before me-she's going to my brother & sister-in-law.Heard a couple of stories where no arrangements where made for pets and they were actually put to sleep because nobody wanted them -got to admit my first thought was for Hatti when I was making my will

Re: Have you written your will?

We didn't make our will until about 10 years ago, we kept putting it off for another day and that 'other' day seems to go on and on.

We finally came round to doing it when both our respective parents passed away ....... then we realised how very important it was.
