If you were asked ...

.... to recommend a hobby or other activity for someone about to retire - what would you suggest and why?

(with apologies for pinching this wholesale from another site. I thought it was an excellent thread)

If they were reasonably fit and active, I'd recommend they went out with The Ramblers to see if they liked that sort of activity. I have been on Ramblers holidays and found them excellent - so it would open up all sorts of possibilities.

Yoga

It is a gentle exercise that is very very good for you, and at the same time you get out and about and meet other people.

I had the chimney swept in this house a few years ago, and the chap who came round was actually retired (but his number was still in the phonebook) ..he was as fit as a fiddle! Told me he does yoga and also pretty much lives off juiced vegetables!

I've been wanting to get into it ever since - just not got the time.

Swimming's a good gentle exercise but if you can afford it buy a camera and join a club.

My next-door neighbour is 78 and he swims twice a week, he's a fit as a fiddle.

I`d say join something where you meet people of all ages. Younger people keep you young at heart. Or get a dog!

Geneology I would love to get into but don't know where to start and don't want to spend a fortune on it either...
I also agree get a dog gets you out you meet loads of people and you have someone you can grumble to without any backlash...

I like to do genealogy too! If you ever need any help there seem to be a few of us on here who could offer help!

I enjoy dog showing, especially with the caravan, lots of retired people do it and spend the entire summer away! Downside is that it can be very expensive!
