Re: Blue passports? They say we could have had them all along...

The contract is going to retender (under EU rules) so it's possible they could be manufactured abroad.

Here is a typical misleading article "The new design passport will feature the Queen's 'Dieu et Mon Droit' crest on the front in gold, replacing the EU marking. " Well mine already has the Queen's crest on it. It's not going to look like the old one in the picture shown (more misleading). It will be the same size & design as the one we have now. Guy Verhofstadt just stated that we could have had whatever colour we liked all along.

Honestly, you couldn't make this up. The PM has even made a statement about its significance. Hello? You could have changed it when you were home secretary Ja?

It would have been better to wait and then we could have just printed it ourselves.

Most Governments print their own, we privatised HMSO, another stupid thing to do, so we have to put it out to Tender.
Only one of the three companies being considered is British.

Oh yes of course blue = Tory.

But I don't care about them going back to blue. I prefer blue but that's just personal preference. It's the nuts media reports and politico statements that this is somehow symbolic. What a load of tosh! It's shambolic that we couldn't have kept the colour everyone liked in 1988. Why didn't we? When it was all under our control. Another example of the government misleading the public and creating an emotional frenzy of patriotic fervour to deflect from more important matters.

Replace images of people holding Mao's red book in the air with British citizens proudly thrusting their blue passports heavenwards in mass group salutes across Britain's open spaces.

Having used the purple one several times, I don't remember any preferential treatment for being in Europe. We were still made to queue unnecessarily and still treated like dirt.

Yes but LD surely that's because of security checks following terrorist attacks rather than passport control? It's far worse here with the E-passport gates and everyone getting stuck when it doesn't work properly.

Obviously the threat of terror attacks don't help but airport staff just enjoy their little bit of power, making you wait until they are ready. Having a European passport didn't help in any way. Italy springs to mind as being one of the worst.

I agree it makes no difference what passport you have because of the checks. In Italy it does depend on the airport. The smaller ones have fast checks and minimal queues. Same in France. We were at a regional airport this year and it was minimal queuing for passport control. But we were the only plane there! Spain always have queues. I'm never sure why.

My worst experience of customs has been in New York. The staff there really do have a power trip going. That experience was before 9/11 so goodness knows what it's like now.

Miami is the worst a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth and insolent resentful airport staff.

It is laughable when I visit the USA, having gone through passport and visa control, I am always picked up by Immigration. Simply because I do not have any fingerprints that are readable. I am always given a heavily armed escort to a holding area, where I am interviewed. It was funny the last time I went in that my son spent a long time discussing the merits of Nikon cameras which the man was planning to get for his wife. He told me that Air Stewardess' have the same problem with finger prints due to constant handling of hot dishes. Mine, apparently are due to over fifty years of typing so the colour of my passport wont help that.

My worst experience was Cuba. Plus our suit cases were the very last to appear on the conveyor, after everyone else had left.
