Venus Transit.

I was all set to watch the Venus Transit across the sun last night, when the wife in her infinite wisdom says, "Jimmy, what kind of a gobshite gets up in the middle of the night to look at the sun?". feeling very dejected I went back to bed.

Re: Venus Transit.

I would love to have watched it but by the time the sun got up this morning the Transit was finished.

At least you saw something Alan. God! just imagine I'll have to wait another 105 years before I get the chance again. I hope to have a better vantage point next time, looking down instead of up, or maybe from the other place, as my Granny used to say, "There'll be no need for an overcoat where you're going me boy."

Cloudy here too, but I found a link: http://www.pcworld.com/article/25705...ntil_2117.html

Honestly though, how do you safely stare at the sun to observe that?

You don't. If you want to see it, use a piece of card with a hole in it and shine it onto a second piece. You should see it quite clearly. This is how I took a picture of the transit last time it appeared.

There are solar glasses and filters around, but unless you know what you are looking for, its very dangerous.
