Curry this, curry that...

Why this obsession with spicy food?

It's just everywhere, and I'm sure it muscles out plain food items on the shelves. Sainsbury's used to do sweet and sour chicken in a can. No more. It's mostly curried stuff.

Want ordinary tomato flavoured food? No chance...it has to have basil added.

In ready meals, I am forever fishing out red, green or yellow peppers. Stop it, please!

I want everyone to know, that I hate curried, hot, or spicy food!!! We do exist, you know...

Oh dear Jazzi, i guess the only answer is to cook everything fresh with only the ingredients you like. Now if your talking potatoes i would be inclined to agree with you, why is this bland insipid product added to everything. Variety is the Spice of life, im partial to curry and peppers BTW.

Jazzi it is a pain at times. I do like spices, but prefer it in an actual curry! I like plain old lentil soup. Not with spices. I agree, there does seem to be more additions in ready food these days. Not to everyone's taste.

I completely agree with you ! And so would the indian gentleman I work with - even he says too much spicy food in this country. The region he originated in has a very subtle spiciness to their dishes and he hates all the overly spiced foods we have in this country.
I don't find it too difficult to find unspiced food though as I cook from scratch so just do my own plain English based cooking.

Yes Patsy, agree with the last bit. When I was in Windermere, going around their large supermarket (the chain of Booths), I pondered...have any of you ever been to a Tesco Extra, or a large Sainsburys or Morrisons, and really had a vast choice? They maybe do have the large ones there, but of course I never had the chance to see.

Perhaps this is why I can easily spend an hour in a supermarket when doing my weekly shop! And then I go down the road and do it again in the next one.

Len was discussing that fact Jazzi - drives him and me round the bend - takes so long to find what you want because of the amount of choice that we're not interested in. They should have a separate area for us

Yes, there is too much choice when it comes to ready meals, pre-mix sauces etc... but it's a devil of a job to buy decent quantities and varieties of herbs and spices in most supermarkets. What really "gets me" is seeing packs of ready mashed potato and chopped onions!!

I usually go to an Asian supermarket two or three times a year and stock up on spices. I also cook meals from scratch and never buy ready meals or use any of these jars of sauce.

The best way to do things - the supermarkets cannot compete with that !
