It's about you not bothering to think about whether YOU might be offending somebody with a flippant comment like that about a national flag. The green panels at the top and the bottom of the flag symbolise the land, while the blue panel in the centre represents the waters of the Torres Strait. The thin black stripes between the green and blue panels signify the Torres Strait Islanders themselves.
I'd still like to know what the white shape(s) in the middle are supposed to be. If you don't know, maybe someone else does.
