Oh, yes. Vesuvius will erupt again... some day. it's only a matter of time. 2months or 2,000 years from now.

An interesting side-bar: volcanoes erupt in different ways based on the amount of gasses present in the magma. Hawaiian volcanoes do not erupt with massive explosions like Vesuvius and Mt St Helens The magma in Hawaii does not contain much in the way of explosive gases and so the magma flows like a blazing hot, molten river down the mountain to the sea.

Enjoyed visiting both Pompeii and Vesuvius but people say Herculaneum is even more impressive. Anybody been there?

Yes, a couple of times. It really is more impressive as it is better preserved (under hot mud rather than volcanic ash). The most impressive part of Pompeii I reckon is the main brothel with its murals. Who would guess that porn is THAT old?
