Memory Loss

Another snippet:

Starting to get forgetful? Don't blame it on getting older - its as likely to be caused by the over the counter drugs you're taking for everyday ailments like insomnia and poor digestion.
Medications with 'anticholinergic' effects cause memory loss and other mental dysfuntioning within just 90 days, researchers have discovered.
Anticholinergic medications include prescription drugs for hypertension, heart disease and chronic lung problems as well as over the counter remedies for insomnia, poor digestion and antihistamines.
Although these drugs' effets have been known for some time, researchers at the University of Iowa were surprised just how quickly they can cause problems. In a study of 3,690 older people taking anticholinergic medication, their mental functioning began to be affected within 90 days.

Re: Memory Loss

Don't suppose those on prescription can be easily replaced by anything though.

Maybe not Twiz, that's the pity of it.
Apparently two biologists have now tracked at least 1,600 side-effects from prescription drugs, and they say this is one of the major reasons why people are rushed to hospital!

Re: Memory Loss

My memory isn't too bad I have my scatty moments though and always have had them, my husband however has lost big portions of his long term memory and his short term memory isn't great. After his stroke we were lucky though as he remembered us all and it could have been far worse we were told.

Add to it aging and I have a feeling he will be an interesting person to be around !

Re: Memory Loss

Well it was certainly the opposite with my Dad, he was taking prescribed drugs since he was a young man, he had TB for 10 years, then he was on heart drugs, pain killers for back pain and more, he had a tablet for everything. I remember seeing him taking his daily dose of tablets one morning, he had them all laid out on the kitchen table and began to swallow them one by one, I joked that it might be easier to take them if he made a tablet sandwich with a cup of tea. The point I'm making is that he was 93 when he died and his memory was as sharp as a pin. On the other hand I avoid taking drugs and am not on any prescribed medicine and I'm always forgetting things, my memory is not good, so it doesn't effect everybody the same way.

Re: Memory Loss

Yes also did they test people who didn't need the tablets ? or could it be the conditions they take the tablets for cause a bit of memory loss ?

Re: Memory Loss

I think a lot of things contribute to memory loss. Stress, I believe is a huge factor ......
