Conscientious Objectors anyone?
I like a good photo op so today went along to a thing called ...International Conscientious Objectors' Day
There's a monument in Tavistock Sq., a couple of hundred people inc. press, speakers, singing, laying white carnations (80 something I think). Each flower represents someone who's been executed or imprisoned for being a CO. Quite moving hearing about things like an Argentinian teen who was beheaded for burning his army uniform in public.

Nice pics as usual d00d.One of my great Uncles was a CO on political grounds during WW1. He was a devout socialist and believed it was wrong to take another human life. He won a medal for bravery as a stretcher bearer.
My Dad was a CO on religious grounds during WW2. He was a Quaker and believed it was wrong to take another human life. He had to go before a tribunal not knowing if he would be shot or imprisoned. Instead he was put to work as part of the Land Army.
Towards the end of the war he saw newsreel footage of the death/concentration camps that had been overrun after D-Day. He lost his faith and decided that actually some things were so evil that it was right to take another person's life, and joined the Army, although he was too late to fight in the war.

Wonderful photos. It is good to know that these people are remembered and respected. One of my uncles was a Quaker and a CO. He spent part of the war working working for Ordnance Survey, and part training to be a nurse in a psychiatric hospital.| Thread Tools | |
