Lupin aphids

Bloody things... never had a problem before but they've totally ruined my lupins in that I've had to cut all the buds, flowers, and leaves right back to ground level - and still the little buggas are there congregating on the stumps that are left.

I've squirted and painted on neat washing up liquid and removed them by hand for a nigh on a week and finally admitted defeat.

Anyone got rid of the them successfully - naturally rather than chemically?

Thanks Mups, yes I did a lot of online checking and read the RHS site, plus a forum somewhere or other. Some recommend just digging them and either slinging them or halving and replanting, not necessarily guaranteeing success.

Either way, it's a no winner methinks.

Tess - Ladybirds what are they?

There were tons of them when the first signs of Spring came, all over the washing, in the house, now when you want them they've disappeared, bit like helpful blokes

I'm not sure Ladybirds eat these. They really are gross, larger than the usual aphids on roses etc, or blackfly. They are grey and literally swamp the lupins in the thousands, it almost looks like a woolly carpet on all the stems. Thousands and thousands. Did I mention thousands? It's gross.

I've always done well with my lupins. Never had any problems. Spread nicely, flower 3 times, even though the 3rd isn't as good as the other two.

Ah well.

Pesta, all I can think of that might be worth a try is these people - The Green Gardener - sell harmless Nematodes for all different types of garden pest.
Just had a look, and they sell Ladybirds, and Ladybird larvae too.

Might be worth having a scroll around their site and you'll see what I mean.

It says each ladybird will eat 5,000 aphids!

Might be worth having a scroll around their site and you'll see what I mean better.

Re: Lupin aphids

I always keep a close eye on any new plants. Bugs of all sorts love new fresh plants. As soon as I see them, I start to remove them by simply drawing my finger and thumb gently up the stems and over the buds. Be sure to wash your hands before you make a sandwich though!
