Re: Changing careers at the age of 50

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your replies.

I am a qualified bookkeeper and do enjoy working with figures. I have seriously thought about becoming a self employed bookkeeper and setting up my own business.

However, we are looking for a larger property and mortgage lenders seem to be quite reluctant to lend money to anyone who is self employed.

I seem to be in a catch 22 situation !!

I was self employed and an IFA got me a mortgage. There are also specialist mortgage brokers but the fly in the ointment is that they like to see 3 years accounts.

Thanks Ray

Yes, I know they do like to see 3 years accounts, and the problem is, we want to move into a bigger property within the next 12 months !!

That's a very good suggestion. I used a man with a van service a few years ago and the guy had an economics masters from a top university and could not find a job in his local area. But he was fabulous as a driver and had made a living out of it. You would need a clean driving licence and health record. As you get older the health bit might be a sticking point for some.

Why do you need a larger property? I'm just asking because it's going to be difficult to find a mortgage not just because of our employment situation but if you are over 50 it gets much harder.
