I find myself in a quandry. Ironing should make no difference if you know the correct temperature. Did you wash it with other clothes? And now my quandry-when did you paint the airing cupboard? Sorry I have a wicked sense of humour

If they are 100% cotton Muddy soak in some bleach then put on a hot wash, that should do it.I did that with some old pillowcase from the bottom of the pile which I use as underslips and a sheet which came from my husband's great Aunts house. They are as white as snow now.

I just tend to use the ones from the top of the pile more often .
