That can't be true Muddy - My husband eats a banana every day but he still gets gout a lot!!

His poor toe joints are totally deformed where the gout has attacked.

I know from seeing him suffer that it's the most excruciating pain. You have my sympathy Vainy.

Colchicine is the medication he takes. It usually works quite quickly.

Re: Gout

No but my father gets this all the time. Apparently it’s from too much uric acid in the system which can be caused by eating too much purine from seafood, drinking too much alcohol particularly beer, drinking caffeine since it’s also dehydrating, eating too many organ meats or fried foods, beef ( too much purine ) too much fructose, rich sauces and shellfish.

Too much purine causes uric acid build up.
Soda pop is especially hard on gout since it contains high amounts of fructose and caffeine. Both of these can worsen gout.

Re: Gout

My knee is at times affected by what the medical profession call pseudo-gout. It's similar to gout hence the 'pseudo' description. In me it affects my knee after sustaining damage to the joint and cartilage in a motorcycle accident some 50 years' ago.

It's crystals that form in the joint which irritate and cause pain. The joint then swells with fluid when the body tries to protect the joint. I've had to have it washed out once as it became so painful I was passing out. At times it flares up so it's rest and paracetamol for a while, usually as the swelling subsides the pain decreases with it.

My sympathies to anyone with this condition, I know just how agonisingly painful it can be.

Re: Gout

Black cherries ... eat a handful a day.
Frozen, tinned or fresh or as a juice.
I once knew a guy who swore it alleviated his gout dramatically.

Failing that I've heard all red fruits can help.

None of this helped my husband. He had two cartons of cherry juice a week plus fresh cherries most days. (and bananas too)

Not true about beer either. We knew a man who suffered gout really badly - he worked on an oil rig so alcohol never touched his lips for 6 months at a time..
