Re: Terrible bridge collapse -Italy

Just watched the latest news on this and saw the van high up on the bridge that had stopped just in time as the bridge collapsed.

It's always uncanny how some live, some die according to chance

There will be a lot of mud slinging until the real reason is discovered. A bit like Grenfell here.

Cost cutting here and there, jobs done too quickly, makeshift patches ect seems to be the order of the day now and all reasons for a possible disaster.

Foe example when we used to repair road surfaces they stayed repaired and regardless of excess volume now the materials used these days don't seem to have lasting quality. It appears to be less about material standards and how much profit can be made

Re: Terrible bridge collapse -Italy

Apparently this was an unusual engineering design. Two other bridges in Italy have the same design and were found to have faults. Concerns had been expressed by italian engineers that the design was unstable. They are saying it is down to maintenance but it seems it's down to warnings falling on deaf ears. Seems it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. If you are told by experts that something is unstable surely you should close it, but sometimes people are optimists and prefer to ignore warnings....
