Just to say

I have not entirely lost my sense of humour. Veronica left at 07.00 this morning. By 09.00 she was back saying her house was full and she needed sleep before going to church.

I let her sleep. Around 13.00 she is awake and ready for church-aha she has forgotten something.

Stephan can I borrow one of your Bibles?-one in English.

But Veronica all of my Bibles are in English I do not have one in Hebrew let alone Shona.

She cannot cope with the older King James phrasing.

Do you have to have a bible with you when you go to church?

It's OK. Jebus will forgive them.

It`s called the path of least resistance. I happen to own more than one Bible. And I read them from time to time. Some great quotes-I also read Shakespeare.

Re: Just to say

The church should supply the bibles!

Oh sorry just read the above post...still, it shouldn't be a problem.

"In his will he left land near York to support a Bible charity, which was devoted to the distribution of bibles to children for use outside of the church or school. The terms of the will require the recipient to learn by rote the 1st, 15th, 25th, 37th, 101st, 113th, 145th psalms."

I learnt Psalm 114 by rote (although in traditionally old fashioned language). Do I qualify?

Re: Just to say

Churches do provide bibles but often people prefer to take their own.

You are a gem lending her yours, and it must be hard to understand the phrasing if it's not your original language. I know several people find it hard going.

I don't take mine I'm paranoid about losing it as it was my nans and she got it from her nan. So quite old and well read by now.

Re: Just to say

When, as a child, I went to church with my mother and siblings (my father refused to go because there isn't a god), I'm sure we never took a bible with us. Come to think of it, I have never seen anyone else take a bible in with them either.

The churches I am familiar with provide prayer books and hymn books. Bibles are surplus to requirements in the CofE church; epistles and gospels are read out to the congregation at the appropriate times.
