What a stroke of luck

We have a television in our kitchen diner on which we watch the news whilst eating our meals. It was fine this morning but at lunch time it was unwatchable as it seemed like some of the colours had disappeared. I retuned but to no avail, and googling the problem it looks like some colour gun thingy may have packed up..

Anyway we knew that we had taken out an extra year's cover when we bought it but couldn't remember how long ago that was, but on digging out the paperwork it appears that we bought the tele on 25th August 2011, and the extra cover therefore runs out TODAY!

What a stroke of luck, because as sod's law would normally have it it would have run out last week or yesterday. We rang the number immediately and even the call centre girl was amazed, but she organised an engineer to come and assess it next Tuesday, and if they can't fix it they will replace with an equivalent new one.

So how lucky is that, I'm elated, just like winning the lottery..

Wow, that is lucky!!

The guarantee for my television (in the front room) runs out next Tuesday so it'll probably break down on Wednesday!

I took out the longest guarantee I could get when I bought my 28" Toshiba television & Panasonic VCR in 1989 and guess what? They both still work like new (they're now in the bedroom and still get regular use) and I never needed to use the guarantee.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for today's products.

Very lucky Barry.
We had a discussion about toasters committing suicide, last year (I think) I'm sure we came to the conclusion that it didn't just cover toasters

I've never taken out extended warranties and although you were lucky with this one, generally they're an unnecessary expense.

I remember at Uni, learning about the 'bathtub curve' of reliability. Basically, a graph of failure versus time of any device is roughly bathtub shaped. Any early life failures are dealt with within the warranty period. This is followed by a period of relative stability, but eventually, the device wears out and the failure rate rises dramatically.

The result is that any extended warranty is unlikely to be needed unless it extends into the later stages. This also means that they SHOULD be cheap - but they're not. That's how manufacturers increase their profit.

Well I cannot complain about my toaster Jan!

On the wife's 20th birthday in 1972 I decided to buy her a new toaster (who said romance is dead) so I went to the local electrical store and in the end came away with a Hoover 2-slice toaster in stainless steel.

Turns out it was the best purchase I made as it still works to this day (I made toast in it this morning in fact).

It is identical to this one.

Amazing Jim.
1, that you are still living
and 2, that the toaster is still going!

Electrical goods are not made to last now.
