Are your affairs in order ?

When I see yet another person has passed away I feel that chill of apprehension that all my affairs are not really in order .

Yes I have a will but it needs updating and I have done that but the updated one now needs updating and still has yet to be printed out signed and taken to the bank etc .

Do my children know where everything ( paperwork etc ) is ?

Have I cleared out stuff I don't want them to find ?

I mean distressing not saucy undies !
Death certificates sad letters .

I need to write my instructions re the dog who is likely to outlive us although my son has said he will take him .

I think my New Years Resolution is to put my affairs in order.

We have a Will but like you, ours needs updated and we have said to each other we need to update it.

Given we are 70 & 71, and "nobody owns tomorrow", we need to get ourselves to the lawyer's office sooner than later.

I agree Muddy, it is something I must do as well.

It's my dogs that worry me most - that's assumign they were all still alive. Two would have to be PTS, as I Know beyond doubt they wouldn't settle anywhere else.

None of them have ever been an only dog either.
If I am out, they have always had each other so not sure if they'd cope being a lone dog in a strange house.

I would rather them not be split up, especially young Gertie, but this makes things very difficult.

Frieda unless your will is very complex you can update it yourself just copy the old one changing what you need to update and get two people to sign it .-they must sign it on each page .
You don't have to go to a solicitors necessarily but if you have doubts it's probaby wiser .

Darn. I thought you were giving us the green light .

Seriously though, such an important reminder about the dogs.

Hi

Mine are.

Papers in the house and one lot with an Executor.

Funeral arranged and paid for, simple cremation, no service.

Kids have had the money already, only the house, which is below the Tax Threshold, so no complicated legals.

Re: Are your affairs in order ?

My Will is done but really needs a couple of tweaks, which I will get round to soon.

I made my solicitor my executor as my will is/will be slightly complicated and I feel it's not appropriate to put that burden on a friend or relation. Plus my kids may very well object to it if they ever learn the full contents and a solicitor will be better positioned to tell them where to get off

My dog....she's nearly 6, I SHOULD outlive her but there's no guarantees so I have 2 friends, either of which would take her. There are written instructions regarding feeding/care that are left in a prominent place in the kitchen.

My sister in law knows where all the important stuff is, she has a key and written instructions from me to enter the property and remove certain items after my death.

I don't care what happens to my possessions (except for the dog and a biscuit tin full of my husband's stuff), same with the funeral, I'll be dead after all.

Re: Are your affairs in order ?

It sounds like you have it nearly sorted Nicol .
My children and husband are my executors and I want to make things easy for them .
But it's complicated ( a solicitor did my first will) as we have both been married before .
i need to simplify stuff .

Hi

I have really simplified things.

My will is very short.

Holly has had her money and has a very good job.

Guy is now epileptic, so everything to him.

A house he can live in or rent out.

There will be no House Clearance, nobody making a Mint out of my stuff, disposal is going to specialised Auctions.

He is a Joint Signatory on my accounts.

He also knows where the biscuit tin is, the immediate cash he may need in case of any problems.
