New Years Eve traditions

My lovely friend in Canada told me about this.

Just before midnight.
A little custom we have in Canada on New Year's Eve

Put a few coins and a slice of bread or muffin on a plate and leave it outside the door until you bring it in the next day.

Supposed to ensure that you will always have enough to eat and money to meet your needs in the next year.

I know about the coal from my neighbour.

Does anyone know any more?

In the East End everyone would be outside banging on pots and pans at the stoke of midnight - that and the haunting sound of the ships in the docks and on the Thames.

Ha, they do that in a village in Northamptonshire where my friend lives too, Dongle.

I bet those who were in bed and asleep curse.

You ....

..... Forgot to add that after you bring it in you are supposed to give the coins to charity and throw the bread out for the birds.

No New Years Tradition except a special dinner with dessert. We aren’t partiers so are often asleep before 12:00

Re: New Years Eve traditions

On New Year's day, good southerners would never miss a year with eating black-eyed peas, along with collard, turnip, or mustard greens, ham, and cornbread. The peas, since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity and good luck; the greens symbolize money; the pork, because pigs root forward when foraging, represents positive motion.

No pork here since we are vegetarians, but I'll be cooking the rest. Thankfully saving the pig didn't hurt my running in 2018 .
