Let's Make Our Own!

Hi everyone. Well, as most of you on here know by now, it’s proving pointless even trying to get some basic foodstuffs from the supermarkets as I did yesterday, all I could see online when I tried to order them was either ‘out of stock’ or ‘sorry, not available at present’ (in other words, the greedy sods have taken them all with their panic buying,) I was really annoyed about it, especially the basics being out of stock such as butter, cream, dried fruit and my wholemeal loaf of bread. Indeed any bread! so I thought….what would my lovely Irish Mum have done in this situation? She didn’t have computers or supermarkets, she lived in a tiny cottage with my grandparents and 7 siblings right out in the countryside in Co. Kerry, no way would they have been able to buy such luxuries as above back then and feed a family of 10! Yet when we were little and made our annual pilgrimage to the old country, I always remember my Nan always putting 2 dishes of lovely tasting butter on the tea table as well as a huge plate of equally gorgeous Soda Bread, (both plain and fruit) and yummy thick cream being poured over her home-made fruit pies from a large pretty jug.

Anyhow, yesterday while I sat and wished bad things on all those panic buyers, I thought. ‘’I bet they made their own butter and cream back then in the old days! So, not really expecting to find any recipe at all without all the specialist equipment one would need, (flippin heck, even my stand mixer recently went on the blink and I am left with just the electric hand whisk part of it at the moment, so the thought of churning butter by hand made me chuckle and I wasn’t really expecting too much hope when I looked for some recipes online.. But guess what? I found three superb recipes which I started on yesterday and finished off today (one of which had to stay in the fridge overnight) and I was blown away at just how easy it was to do.

So without further ado, here are the four recipes that I have done. They are so simple it’s ridiculous.

Make your own Butter

Make your own Cream from Milk

Make a lovely Fruit Cake with just 3 simple ingredients.

Make a Soda Bread with Raisins.

I will do each of them on a new post if you don’t mind,( but without all the chat.)

At least now I know I will never be without butter or cream during this crisis, the soda bread I knew how to do anyway but will do the recipe again for you because you deserve it.
Actually, my poor darling mum will be turning in her grave at the way I do my Soda bread these days. The mere thought that I add butter and an egg to the mix would horrify her, but there you are. I prefer it this way, so does HWMO as it makes the Soda bread a bit sweeter and lighter. (forgive me please Mum).

Hold on to your hats……..
