Re: I Remember When

Reading back through this post is bringing back so many memories.

I remember when my sister wanted to make her own wine and my dad complaining and saying what do you want to do that for. She only got half way through the first batch before he took over and she never got near again.

We also had to warn people as well that it was lethal stuff. Was lovely though.

Eeee, that brings back a memory.
My Granddad made some wine, and kept it below stairs.
One night, I thought Hopalong Cassidy had broken in - bang! bang! bang!

The next morning, my Nan went mad. Many of the corks had blown out of the bottles..

My Gran used to make orange wine in an enamelled bread bin - now THAT was really lethal stuff!!!

I took up making wine (and liqueuers too). Parsnip wine was really strong. I also made 5 gallons of Rice & Raisins wine - that went down very well amongst my friends, I was very popular when it came to parties.

Re: I Remember When

Many years ago, when I was lucky enough to live in a cottage on what was Padshull Crown Estate, in Pattingham (now apparently a Golf Club/Spa), I knew a couple of brothers who originated from an area of the Black Country known as Gornall (now there's an indecipherable accent/dialect if ever there was one). The one brother and his wife kept a small holding, and they made wines from just about everything you could imagine, from veggies (including peels thereof) and fruit they grew, to stuff scavenged from surrounding fields and hedgerows. Many an evening, and sometimes entire days and nights, were spent sampling their wares. Invites to daytime barbecues or evening dinners were looked forward to with eager anticipation.

They ranged from pleasant, to downright blow your socks off and everything I between. I particularly remember the rhubarb, the parsnip, the raspberry and strawberry varieties, and oh boy, the marrow rum!!

Re: I Remember When

I remember a few stories from way back serving in the army. Blokes always used to play mean jokes on one another.
One guy did a job in a paper lunch bag and called out to his mate from an upstairs window.
"Hey Paul"
"What?"
"Catch this"
He caught it all right.

Re: I Remember When

Had a flashback the other day..Does anyone remember winkles?

I used to get 3d worth from the market on Saturday and when I got home, I would sit outside eating them with a pin..
At the same market was the ''Pork scratchings man'' who would make a cornet out of paper and fill it with hot..salty..pork skin..
And then there was the comic stall...6 for a shilling..American comics..I loved reading the ads...
''X-ray glasses..see thru peoples clothes!''..

''Yesirree..win a real life pony!''

''Sea monkeys..just add water!''

Wish I'd have kept hold of them..probably worth thousands now!!

Re: I Remember When

Problem with keeping stuff like comics etc is that they are only worth anything if they are pristine and that means sealed and unread, otherwise they are only worth pennies.

On a similar note, anyone recall the smaller illustrated books? Usually war/soldier stories? I used to love those and yes, I am a girl, so sue me.
