Hitler, was he a genius ?

On the basis that Hitler did more for Germany in five years that our lot could do in 50 years. Was he a genius in power for Germany before his war years?

Having taught Hitler and the rise of National Socialism for over 50 years I have come to the sad conclusion that intellectual study and debate is often ignored and popular mythology tends to be the dominant narrative.
Genius ? Certainly not. Clever politician yes, but helped by the economic collapse into power. Military genius ? Hardly. Like Stalin he interfered with his Generals too much and cost Germany the War. Economic Genius ? No way. Schacht brought about the German economic miracle as Hitler's Finance Minister until Hitler sacked him and gave Goering the job who botched it. Illusionist ? Certainly and towards the end probably insane.

He was a psychopath, intelligent, manipulative, delusional and charismatic. Unfortunately such personalities are magnets to people who are looking for someone to follow.

There's a good argument to be put that if he had died or been assassinated in 1939 he would be remembered in history as a great statesman.
