And most of that €80-90Bn is with Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

A hijack if I'm allowed because I have a confession to make. As you know, we've recently moved home and have had to buy a new washing machine, tumble drier and built-in oven (well that was a bit of an impulse buy 'cos V didn't like the one that was left behind by the previous owner). They were all German-made because, as V put it, they're the best in the market. Buying now has also possibly saved us any extra cost due to the imposition of tariffs.

They're German-made so they'll probably see us out unlike similar models from the likes of Hoover, Hotpoint, et al.

We bought kitchen equipment a couple of years ago by AEG, thinking that they were German.

No, not any more. Now taken over by Electrolux and made in Italy.

And most of them are crap in one way or another.

Cooker hood - very noisy and occasionally turns on on its own, scaring the cats out of the kitchen.

Microwave - cooks unevenly, no turntable, complicated controls.

Oven - self-cleaning oven doesn't self-clean, cooks unevenly.

Dishwasher - looks very nice, except doesn't clean very well.

Fridge-freezer - too tall for Marge to reach the top shelf.

Gas hob - no problems!

We live and learn.

In honesty you don't have an awful lot of choice.

Let's see how much that changes in the future because that is a great example of how isolationist & restrictive the EU has become.
We used to make much of that here, but as with so many things our homegrown makers all moved to areas with cheaper labour or were just sold off because we - unlike the other members - stuck to the rules and didn't sibsidise our own.

There will be real opportunities for a return to British manufacturing of things like those, at a time when tariffs could well see these German goods become too overpriced compared to either or own or to (say) South Korean - or to Japanese even.
We know that we can make the best quality goods in the world because we still do in quite a few things, and we have a history of excellence in manufacturing too.

We bought Bosch appliances, JBR. We've had a Bosch fridge/freezer for about 15yrs now and it's never let us down. When we lived in Italy, we bought German-made stuff as well after a bad experience with Italian-made m/cs - all style and no quality in our opinion.

Don't tell Percy but the quality of Neff, Siemens and Miele has been in decline for years.
They aren't as good as they used to be ........ in fact those who watch BakeOff have probably seen where the Neff oven door fell off.

But you're right; most of the rest is indeed crap, made to a price and not to a quality.
And worse, most of the white goods are made by just a handful of companies no matter what brand is pasted on it.
A Zanussi cooker is made in exactly the same factory as an AEG or a Tricity Bendix or, as you say, an Electrolux.
Indesit makes NewWorld, Hotpoint, Creda and more, then Hoover makes Candy and Kelvinator & others.

The quality is invariably poor which I suppose is how, just as with cars, the South Koreans and others are able to make such highly-regarded competitors in many areas like washing machines and refrigeration.

Re: Barnier Issues Ultimatum!

Heh heh heh, it looks like sensible people know only too well how things are likely to go.

Here's a report in The Telegraph:
"The EU's reported ban on British travellers from January 1 is unlikely to deter individual countries in Europe from allowing UK visitors to enter regardless, according to industry experts' response to the news."
"Paul Charles, CEO of travel consultancy The PC Agency, tells us: “I cannot believe that EU countries who rely on the spending power of UK business and leisure travellers will seek to block entry after January 1. I’m sure that individual countries who need UK tourism will be sensible and override any EU-bloc decision which prevents entry."
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/202...tests-vaccine/

Yup, it's the money that talks - as always.
This will be just the same for much of the goods that EU companies sell to us- one way or another they will do everything they can to keep hold of that business rather than lose it.
